Valentine’s Day Wine Pairings

9-8

It’s that time of year when you celebrate the love you share with that special someone in your life…or the one you want to be that special someone. In either case, it’s always impressive to know the right type of wine to order at dinner, or bring home, for the perfect pairing.

Below is our crash course in Valentine’s Day wine pairings.

Cheeses:

wine and cheese go hand in hand. Depending on the types of cheese, the right wine can vary. But a good rule to go by is:

Soft Cheese:

sweet white wines (Riesling, Moscato, etc.), rich white wines (Chardonnay, Viognier, etc.), sparkling wine, champagne or a dessert wine.

Hard Cheese:

sweet white wines, sparkling/champagne (these pair well with anything salty), a medium bodied red (Sangiovese, Merlot, etc.) or a bold red (Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet).

Fish:

you often can’t go wrong ordering just about any white. Specifically, a dry white wine (Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, etc.) or a richer white (Chardonnay, Viognier, etc.). If you’re impressing a red wine only drinker, a light red will work in this case (think pinot noir).

Poultry:

stick to a rich white (Chardonnay, Viognier, etc.), or a light-medium bodied red. These include everything from Pinot Noir and Sangiovese to Zinfandel and Grenache.

Red Meat:

red meat means red wine. Lean toward the heavier reds, such as Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah. Or mix things up with a red blend.

Dessert:

this is an easy one, choose a dessert wine. Try a port or sherry – there are both red and white dessert wines so stay true to what the evening’s preference seems to be.
