Two studies ask if alcohol has health benefits or if moderate drinkers have healthier lifestyles
Jacob Gaffney
Posted: September 28, 2010

Numerous studies have found a link between drinking alcohol in moderation and living a longer life. The common interpretation is that the drink itself is behind the results, that either a balanced amount of alcohol or the polyphenols found in red wine provide health benefits.

But a new study asks whether it’s the drinks or the person’s medical history that’s responsible. A team at the University of Texas found that past behavior versus current lifestyle decisions may help explain why moderate drinking is so beneficial later in life, compared to abstention or heavy drinking.

In research slated to be published in the November 2010 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, lead researcher Dr. Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin and colleagues looked at outpatient data from 1,142 men and 682 women, aged 55 to 65 years, and followed them for 20 years, recording causes of death and other data. At the end they found that, compared to moderate drinkers, patients who abstained from alcohol had more than double the estimated mortality risk, while heavy drinkers and light drinkers had a 70 percent and a 23 percent higher mortality risk, respectively.

A large portion of the subjects who abstain from drinking admitted to prior problems with alcohol and/or poorer health habits. Lifetime moderate drinkers, they found, use alcohol less as a coping agent and more as a social lubricant. They also tend to exercise more often and had lower rates of obesity.

“Our findings are consistent with an interpretation that an important part of the survival effect for moderate drinking among older adults is explained by confounding factors associated with alcohol abstention,” they say in the text. “Alcohol consumption of one or two drinks per day does not appear to increase the risk of cognitive impairment or decline in older adults.”

But what of studies that find wine drinkers enjoy an extra benefit, presumably because of antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols found in red wine? The theory that polyphenols provide wine’s benefits has led to a growing supplement industry, with shops selling resveratrol and other polyphenols in pill form.

A recent Dutch study looked at the chemical components found in grapes and found little to support claims that polyphenols such as resveratrol provide cardiovascular benefits when acting alone. “Grapes and wine contain high amounts of polyphenols, but the effects of these have hardly been investigated in isolation,” write the researchers from Unilever Research and Development in the August issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

The research team examined 35 healthy males. The men ate low-fat diets and some took daily doses of capsules containing 800 mg of grape polyphenols. The others took a placebo.

Looking at blood flow, an indicator of heart health and overall longevity, the team found that the cardiovascular health of the men did not improve with either the antioxidant capsules or the substitute pills. The scientists write that the polyphenol treatment had “no major impact” on blood flow.

But they expressed doubt over whether their findings relate to wine drinking. “Please keep in mind that we tested only the effect of grape polyphenols provided as supplements,” says lead author Linda A. J. van Mierlo. “Wine also contains other substances, such as alcohol.”

It may be that the sum of components in wine is stronger than any part. But further research is needed on whether the answer is wine or lifestyle.

Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon:
Red Mountain, Washington
Red Mountain was not officially recognized until it received AVA (American Viticulture Area) status in 2001. The AVA status was granted in recognition of the area’s unique soil and climatic conditions creating a taste profile in its red wines that is truly distinct to the region. The vineyards have high calcium carbonate content in their soil. This imparts a distinctive chalkiness in Cabernets. The chalkiness combines with the powerful dark fruit qualities of the grape to create the big, chewy mouth-feel that is a clear signature of Red Mountain Cabernet. Another distinction is a hint of orange peel or Grand Marnier-like aromatics and flavours. Together these two traits make Red Mountain Cabernet immediately recognizable, highly prized, and much sought after.

Red Mountain is one of America’s smallest AVA’s. We estimate that only about 800 tons of Cabernet were harvested at Red Mountain in 2007. Red Mountain Cab is so rare that you have not been able to purchase it in Canada in any form – until now. Fermentation on Red Mountain Cabernet Crushed Grapes and our two-stage Hungarian oak process delivers all of the body, aromatics, and flavours that make Red Mountain Cabernet such a standout. Purchase the best corks that you can find, and be disciplined enough to age the wine at least 1 year; then save some to enjoy after 2, 3, or 4 years in the bottle. A wine for your best cuts of beef or lamb and luckiest friends.

Cabernet/Merlot Walla Walla

Walla Walla Washington
The Walla Walla appellation is very special. Its outstanding reds were what first put Washington on the world wine map. The wines are now grouped with world standard reds from Bordeaux, Napa and Sonoma. Walla Walla Cabernets and Merlots consistently rank in top 10 lists of the finest from the Americas. Our Bare Ridge offering is the classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet and Merlot but typifies the unique Walla Walla profile of intense fruit and spice flavours and aromatics. Notes of currant, cherry and plum are backed by hints of black pepper, anise and coffee. Two-stage French and Hungarian oaking nicely mellows the tannins and adds a suggestion of toastiness.

Italian Reserva Pinot Grigio
Italian Riserva Pinot Grigio Oak 0 / Body 4 / Sweetness 0
A star variety from the Alto-Adige area of northern most Italy. Medium bodied. Lively, fresh citrus
notes. Subtle spiciness. Lots of appeal! Usually enjoyed young, but may be aged for several months.

White: Washington Late Harvest DRY Rielsling.
Washington Reserve Harvest Riesling Oak 0 / Body 4 / Sweetness 6
The mature Riesling grapes from Cherry Hill Vineyard in Washington provide the foundation for this
luscious wine. Our “Flavour Reserve” adds a concentration of tastes and natural sweetness that make
late-picked wines so special. Notes of honey, apple and apricot dominate the aroma and taste, right
through the long, rich finish. Displays much of the complexity of an Ice Wine, but with less sweetness.

1 quart sparkling water or seltzer, chilled

Sangria Recipe is perfect for big summer parties – always a favorite, you may consider doubling the recipe.
Ingredients:

1 Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz)

1 Lemon cut into wedges

1 Orange cut into wedges

1 Lime cut into wedges

2 Tbsp sugar

Splash of orange juice or lemonade

2 Shots of gin or triple sec (optional)

1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen)

1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)

4 Cups ginger ale

Preparation:

Pour wine into a large pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and pineapple then add sugar, orange juice and gin. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale, berries and ice just before serving. If you’d like to serve right away, use chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice. However, remember that the best Sangrias are chilled around 24 hours in the frig. – allowing the flavors to really marinate into each other.

Enjoy & Cheers!

Bottoms Up
LCBO prefers that only rich people abuse alcohol

Nanny state: the LCBO knows best (Image: Derek Purdy)

When the HST comes into effect on July 1, dry cleaning and plumber calls will be more expensive, while books and diapers will cost the same. But one of the few items that was expected to drop in price—booze—is actually going up. According to the Star, the price hike is a reality, despite the fact that alcohol taxes are falling from their present 17 per cent to the HST’s 13.

For example, a 750 millilitre bottle of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon, a popular Australian red wine that currently retails for $16.35, should be dropping in price to $15.80 thanks to the HST.

However, sources say the retail price will jump to $16.45—only a dime more than it is now, but 65 cents higher than it needs to be.

Similarly, the HST should lower the price of a 750 millilitre bottle of Pelee Island VQA Chardonnay, an Ontario white, from $17.95 to $17.35. Instead, it will go up to $18.05. That’s 70 cents in lost savings to wine drinkers.

The LCBO justifies the increase by saying that it has to keep prices high because of its “social responsibility”—in other words, so that Ontarians don’t all become alcoholics when liquor becomes five per cent cheaper.

Who knew that we were that close?
